Jo Beverley's Early Novels - Lord Wraybourne's Betrothed - The Stanford Secrets - The Stolen Bride - Lovers & Ladies

Jo Beverley is one of my favorite novelists. Her romance novels have always been complex and her characters are always interesting. She has written Medieval, Early Georgian, and Regency romance. I've loved most of them.

Some of her early novels are now being re-released. It's very exciting since many of these have not been available for years.

In fact, as a high school student in the mid-90's, I wanted to have copies of these books so bad that I was tempted to keep the ones I checked out from the library. Since that would be evil (and bad library karma), I did not do that. It's okay, more than a decade later, I can now own copies of them!

The characters appear across books, but each one is pretty stand alone. I haven't read them for years, so I pulled the summaries the product descriptions. My teenage-self quite enjoyed them.

I believe the order of the books are:

  • Lord Wraybourne's Betrothed: A Romance of Regency England (Signet Eclipse)

From The New York Times bestselling author of A Lady's Secret, a classic Regency romance back in print and in trade for the first time.

Even if the handsome, debonair Lord Wraybourne is only marrying Jane Sandiford for her fortune-as she suspects-that does not diminish the powerful sway her betrothed seems to hold over her. The Sandiford Heiress has lived a sheltered life and is known for being stuffy, so her passionate responses to her fiancé's attentions catch her by surprise.

As confused and mortified as she is by her own emotions, Jane is even more scandalized when the dread Whisperer, the scourge of polite Society, rasps unspeakable vileness into her ear. And she is troubled by the news that someone is assaulting young women "of the middling class" in the streets of London. Yet she remains unaware that an adversary closer to home schemes to sabotage the relationship between Lord Wraybourne and his betrothed...

  • The Stanforth Secrets

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Secret Wedding, a classic Regency romance back in print and in trade paperback for the first time.

Though the widowed Chloe Stanforth loves her house by the sea, a series of puzzling incidents has left her unsettled and anxious to find a new home. Her situation is complicated by the arrival of her husband's cousin, for whom she has long harbored a deep and guilty attraction.

Back from the war, Justin Delamere hopes he can finally woo Chloe, until he suspects her guilty of treason-and murder. Can he trust the woman he's always desired, and can Chloe surrender her most private secrets to the man who controls her freedom and now her heart?

  • The Stolen Bride

When Beth Hawley journeys to Lord Wraybourne's castle to help young Lady Sophie Kyle prepare for her wedding, she has to share her carriage with two unexpected travelers, the rakish Sir Marius Fletcher, who is stranded after his curricle overturns, and an unidentified elderly woman, found unconscious in a wrecked carriage.

As the date of Sophie's wedding draws near, Beth realizes some mysterious shadow from the past seems to haunt the bride and groom. The elderly woman, suffering from memory loss, may hold the key. Beth turns to Sir Marius for help, but her efforts are thwarted at every turn as she encounters a most unlikely villain-while her only ally seems to have his mind set more on romance than the danger at hand.

  • The Fortune Hunter (in Lovers and Ladies)

A stunning beauty rejects the charming suitor who isn't wealthy enough to save her impoverished family. But she can't so easily dismiss the memory of their sweet shared kiss.

  • Deirdre and Don Juan (in Lovers and Ladies)

The dashing Earl of Everdon is most eager to marry someone-anyone-who will bear him an heir. But when he meets a quiet, well-bred lady who fits the bill, he must resort to an amorous dance of deception to gain her acceptance to his proposal.
