Major Puchases & Other Updates

by ardith

I was tempted to buy a new computer since my laptop did a flier. Instead I removed Windows XP totally and installed Ubuntu Linux. It’s soooo cute. And so far has been easy to use. I installed Vine so I can run yWriter4 (my preferred program for writing fanfiction). I have two issues right now. 1) No iTunes (I think I can use it through VINE, though) and 2) my wireless card doesn’t seem to be working. I think that can be fixed, though.

I also decided to give my parents a new refrigerator to repay them housing me for the past year. We decided on this GE Profile 24.9 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator . I actually got a great deal since they price matched Lowes and gave me $100 off that price. Plus there’s a $200 gift card with the purchase. Oh, and I can’t forget the $50 Energy Star rebate. I did add a 4 year extended repair plan. I know I probably won’t need it, but this particular fridge has a touch screen that I fear may break.

Additional updates? Oh, I’ve cut my hair. It’s a 1920′s style bob. In January, I permed my very long hair and loooved it. Unfortunately, it got kinda dry after 4 months. I got a trim a few weeks ago, but this weekend, I went to a stylist to cut it even shorter. So here it is:

Of course, my head feels tons lighter since I’ve cut so much hair off. The stylist was worried since I asked for a lot of bangs. She said, “Most people want less bangs.”

I told her that I wasn’t most people. I’m a bit weirder than that.

Oh, I also caught Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crytal Skull (longest title ever!). I hear people have mixed reactions to the film. Personally, I had a lot of fun. As I told my friend Nay, “It ain’t Shakespeare, yo.” It’s fun. It has trills, spills, and I have to admit I screamed a time or two. Even if there were silly bits, go and watch the previous films again and I think you’ll find some silly bits in those, too.

Ok, now I think I’ve updated. I hope that my friends who blog-stalk will be happy with the update. ^_^ I’m off to blog-stalk them right back.

Near Miss

by ardith

I know that I’m a lucky girl.

I’ve got a great big family and a bunch of wacky friends who care about me. I have a steady job, a nice car, and live in comfort.

Of course, you can lose it all in a second.

I realized that as I drove to San Diego today. My sister was throwing a Fob Party for her boyfriend’s 30th birthday. If you don’t know what a Fob Party is, it’s a bit of a self-deprecating phrase/term of endearment for a family party. It was a term we used growing up in San Diego as part of the immigrant Filipino community. The though being that we’re all fobs and family, but it’s good and even great to be that way.

But I digress. As I was driving south on the 15 FWY, someone’s furniture fell out of their pick-up truck. Apparently, an empty dresser does not have enough weight on it’s own to weather 70+ miles per hour in the back of a pick-up.

The truck was in a slower lane, but the dresser flew across the whole freeway, landing near the fast lane, just a few feet away from my car. I swung my C-RV to the left (but not into the center divide), and sped around the debris, my heart pounding. A few seconds faster, my passenger side (along with my mother) would have been hit. Luckily, I’ve been trained in the art of swerving from my years playing Mario Cart and other video games.

Note to self: Might need to put some time to play Lego Star Wars’ flight simulators to sharpen skills.

After the near-accident, we went on our merry way and reached our destination without any further danger.

Of course, seconds can mean life or death or paying out a deductible. I enjoyed the Fob party and the yummy food, drove home and took a nice, life affirming nap.

Thankfully, no more furniture was hurt in the process of returning home. Monday is fast approaching and everything is pretty swell, you know, cuz I didn’t have an accident. Score one for all those video games that gave me a pretty fast reaction time.
